Project Process and Schedule

The transportation corridor study began October 1, 2003 and continued through Spring 2005. The study limits began from east of Interstate 75 (I-75) in Lee County and extended west along Colonial Boulevard and Veterans Parkway, then north along Burnt Store Road to a connection at I-75 in Charlotte County.  The study identified road improvements to meet long-term 2030 travel needs along this transportation route.

Project Process

The study process includes several steps.  They are listed below:

    bul2 Evaluate traffic projections and growth
    bul2 Collect physical, natural, and cultural information
    bul2 Develop conceptual road improvements and alternatives
    bul2 Evaluate conceptual alternatives including impacts and cost
    bul2 Summarize the study process and recommendations

Through the community involvement process, the public at-large and your elected officials were updated on our progress.  Updates were provided on this webpage throughout the course of the study.

Project management and contract administration was handled by the Lee County Department of Transportation.  The Charlotte County – Punta Gorda Metropolitan Planning Organization assisted Lee County with project management in Charlotte County.

The project team that conducted the transportation study is composed of highly experienced transportation planning firms knowledgeable about Southwest Florida and the State of Florida.  Their staff consists of professional planners, environmentalists, and engineers.  The firms are:

PBS & J PBS&J
Prime consultant for the project responsible for the collection and evaluation of engineering and environmental information. PBS&J will develop and evaluate conceptual road improvements along the study route.

CRSPE, Inc. CRSPE, Inc.
Traffic sub-consultant assisting PBS&J with the review and evaluation of future traffic forecasts and growth.  CRSPE, Inc. will develop a survey which will ask about the public’s travel characteristics.  In addition, CRSPE, Inc. will evaluate the potential for development of an expressway corridor in Lee County.

Cella & Associates, Inc. Cella & Associates, Inc.
Community involvement sub-consultant coordinating the community workshops and task force meetings.  Cella & Associates, Inc. receives your suggestions and addresses your questions about the project.

Florida Transportation Engineering, Inc. Florida Transportation Engineering, Inc.
Traffic sub-consultant administering the travel survey along the study route.  Florida Transportation Engineering, Inc. collects current traffic counts along the study route and surrounding area.

Roadway concept sub-consultant assisting PBS&J in the evaluation of roadway concepts and impacts.

Schedule

The transportation corridor study began in October 2003.  At the request of Lee County, the project schedule was advanced from 24 months to 18 months with a completion date in spring 2005.
